Ok, I noticed that UU has been moved to the catagory of Syncretic Relgion at Religious Forums...
And so, I'm just curious, what is meant by Syncretic Religion? I have never heard UU Catagorized that way...
Here is the dictionary.com definition...
syn·cre·tism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sngkr-tzm, sn-)
n.
Reconciliation or fusion of differing systems of belief, as in philosophy or religion, especially when success is partial or the result is heterogeneous.
Linguistics. The merging of two or more originally different inflectional forms.
So, by this it would seem to be taking UU one step beyond Pluralistic religion.... And while that is indeed my personal belief, I am not certain that is "universal" to UU. I am syncretic in my theology, but I dont know if UU as a group is ready to move beyond pluralism...
I'm not criticizing here... I just wanted to open up the discussion, and this seemed an good way to do it. Are we a syncretic religion, or a pluralistic religious movement? Are we a movement of religious liberals of different traditions, or are we moving towards a "Universal syncretic faith" that combines different traditions into a mystical naturalism that is all our own?
I was originally going to post this as RF, but decided it might be just the kind of post to keep "in the family" for the moment, as other non-doctrinal traditions might not understand...
Yours in Faith,
David
